Braid in a braid

Braid in a braid was another QDAD design.  I had been thinking about it for a long time in my head, but QDAD helped me flesh it out.

I put the scraps on the back in some green...I kind of like this side better than the official top.  So, besides the quilting, I didn't do anything that would make this the obvious back side so that I can flip it over sometimes.

I do like the end result of the braid in braid, although the larger braid isn't as prominent as I was expecting.

I had earlier done the "roll up the quilt to take a picture" shot (which didn't make the final cut) and my son wanted to do it too.  I like his imperfect roll.

And the flowers are just starting to show up!

I quilted it to try and emphasis the larger braids.  It is just a curvy wiggle to make some strings of beads.

I put it in its final home, on the cedar chest.  My son wondered why I put it there.  "To protect the top" I said.  "From kitty?"  "Uh, yeah.  From kitty"  and from duplo airplanes and assorted cars and whatever else feels like it needs to go on top.

March update

1. Baby girl quilt.  This is my March ALYOF goal.  I actually got pretty far on in during February, which is good because I won't have a ton of time in March.  I still have to quilt two of the colors and the background and bind.

2. Braid in braid. Once the quilting got going, it was fast. I still have to bury threads and bind.

3. Aunt's throw. The rays are finished.  Next up is to put it back on the frame to do a bit more quilting.  I'm still hoping to finish by Easter, but we'll see what happens.

4. scrap quilt.  Still working on blue, but making progress.

5. Baby quilt, unknown gender.  Not sure what I'm doing with this yet.

Feb ALYOF

I don't feel like I got a ton done in January, but I also started playing a computer game more again.  Life is rough when you have too many hobbies. :p

1. Baby Elanor's quilt. My February ALYOF goal is to completely finish the top.  I have two more rows put on since the picture was taken and it still isn't quite wide enough so I'm making two more rows.  I'm hoping it doesn't look too crazy and that I can finish it by the end of February.  I'm going with an easy quilting pattern, so that should help.

2. Braid in braid.  This was supposed to be a quick and easy quilting job, but I'm currently on my third thread and have unpicked the right two braids about four times.  Urg.  But I think it's finally a go, and now it should be quick and easy.  Except that I might run out of thread...

3. Baby girl quilt.  I've mapped out the pieces needed for the next baby quilt.  Colors are not correct.  It'll be more girly.

January ALYoF

This year I really have a lot of quilts I would like to finish up.  (It's baby season!)  I was thinking about just continuing working along, but decided it would be more fun to do it as part of a group.


So for January, I'm going to link up with A Lovely Year of Finishes and my goal is to
1. Finish Noah's quilt.  I just finished the top in record time.  I think I looked at my design, figured out the easiest way to do it, and accepted some of the unexpected results as design features.  I need to quilt and bind.

Other things to work on:
2. Baby Elanor's quilt.  The design is all set and I hopefully have all the fabric.

3. Baby girl quilt.  I have some of the fabric and am finishing up the design.  I'd like to finish by the end of March.

4. Baby quilt, unknown gender.  Not sure what I'm doing with this yet.

5. Baby quilt, gender TBD.  No progress. I'd like to finish by July.

6. Baby quilt, gender TBD.  No progress. I'd like to finish by August.

7. Aunt's throw. I have quilted the cross part and some of the rays.  When looking at it for pictures I decided that I only need to do four more rays.  There are a few wrinkles, but I might see if they wash out before trying to fix.  (Started April 2013.)  I'd really like to finish by Easter.

8. Baby quilt - urban cabins The top is finished but no recipient.  Possibly one of the babies above (Started October 2013.)

9. scrap quilt. I have started blues.  The number of greens are about equal to the first three colors together.  I expect blue will also be pretty big though.   (Started January 2014.)

10. Space robot quilt.  About a 3/5 of the blocks are finished.  I only finished two blocks last month, but did find a nice backing (Started September 2014.)

11. Metro Lattice I just need to finish the binding by the clip...I'm actually hoping to finish it tonight.  (Started Sept 2014.)

12. Metro Lattice add-on.  Done - just waiting on the quilt to show off and give away.

13. Braid in braid  Top and back are done, just needs to be quilted.  I kind of like the back better than the front. (Started Oct 2014)

WIP Wednesday

I've worked on several things over the last two weeks, but only have two pictures to show.

1) Braid in braid.  I have the first braid done - all 202" of it.  Tonight I trimmed it and just started to rebraid it.  I'm curious to see how it turns out.

2) I've been quilting the metro lattice.  Do you like my "rulers"?  I tried doing a quarter inch echo around the pieces, but was way to wiggly.  The cardboard is far from perfect, but it is about the right height for the foot and at least keeps me from having terrible lines.

What to work on?

I wasn't sure why I wanted to work on this evening and so I chain pieced three projects.  My scrappy strips, space robots, and the braid in a braid.

I managed to finish the green scrap strip.  Three things in rotation works really well as the braid cannot be chain pieced as an individual project.  I'll probably add in another space robot block.

WIPs

The only small goal I had in October was to finish a few space robot blocks.  Since I technically did that within the first few days, the rest of October was wide open.  I loved having freedom to bounce all over the place!  Usually I really like to have a goal, but there is something exciting to not having a specific goal too.  So here are the things I did, and the things that I didn't do, for October.

Finished:

In progress:
1. Aunt's throw. I have quilted the cross part in a wood grain.  (Started April 2013.)

2. Baby quilt - urban cabins I worked on this for two nights and got the sashing on and some of the rows put together. (Started October 2013.)

 

3. scrap quilt. I have started greens.  All the pieces are joined in pairs or quartets.  (Started January 2014.)

4. Space robot quilt.  About a 3/5 of the blocks are finished.  I am just plugging away at them. (Started September 2014.)

5. Metro Lattice I finished the top.  It was just so fun to work on!  I should make more rainbow things.  (Started Sept 2014.)

6. Metro Lattice add-on.  I made something with the left over pieces.  Doll quilt?  Pillow?  TBD.

7. Braid in braid I started the braid.  I have about half of the length made before I can start the second braid. (Started Oct 2014)

Braid in braid

I've always thought that a braid in a braid could be a fun quilt.  Through QDAD, I finally experimented on it.  I'm still learning EQ7 so the smaller braids aren't very well done, but you can still get the idea.

Day 1: Half braid in braid.  I really just got tired of trying to get the small braids in and stopped halfway.  It's still neat though.  (Palette)

Day 2: Braid in braid, three colors.  I really like this one.  (Palette)

Day 3: Braid in Braid, four colors.  I don't like this one as much.  With an even number of colors the overall picture doesn't look as random. (Palette)

Day 4: Braid in braid in braid, three colors.  I don't like this one either.  You can only see the small braids.  If the bigger braids get lost, what's the point of doing all that work? (Palette)

So the result of all of this is that I really want to do a three color braid in braid.  I've figured out a place to put it, so now I just need to choose colors...and actually do it.  It got added to the goals list, so it'll probably happen sometime.
