Three quilts!

It is currently baby season again.  Have you noticed they seem to come in groups?  Anyway, I currently have three baby quilts done.  Three!  Two are for babies that aren't even here yet.  I'm rather amazed that I'm so on top of it.  I still need to get pictures of two of them, but in the meantime they're sitting in the house, making me feel happy.

But, in all fairness, there is one more baby in August and I don't think that he will get his blanket on time.  I have started working on it though, so hopefully it won't be too late either.

Urban log cabins

Urban log cabins has been a long time in finishing.  It was going to be for a baby that ended up being a girl...navy is the new neutral, right?  Well, maybe I didn't make the background navy enough but in my mind this is definitely a boy's quilt.  So the top was mostly done and then it sat, waiting for the right baby.

Well, the right baby has come along!  In an effort to take more interesting pictures, my boys and I visited a local park.  It is a bit more work, but so much more fun to find cool places to take pictures.

But I still haven't quite figured out how to drape a quilt on a sitting place and make it look...right.

The quilt features two different color ombres.  (I don't think ombre is quite the right word, but am not sure what it should be.  Two different hue changes?  I'm really not sure.)  The first is up and down, where the large rectangles in the quilt go from whitest to dark green.  It is an approximate...there are a few times I had to flip it a bit.

Secondly, from side to side the L-parts of the cabin have an ombre.  Both ombres use the same colors, so one corner is white-white and the opposite corner is dark-dark.

I debated the quilting on this for a long time.  The problem was that I didn't want thread that contrasted too much in any of the green parts.  And there wasn't a good way to do just the blue parts without a ton of starting and stopping.  So I ended up with straight lines.  Two in each of the big stripes and two in the little almost-stripes up in one direction and two in just the little stripes in the other direction.

Per my normal for baby blankets, backed in minky and bound in sateen.

July rollover

1. Baby blessing quilt. As part of a baby shower some relatives wrote on fabric squares.  I put the top together this past month.  (Which took way longer than it should have because I didn't lay it out properly.)  So for the July ALYoF, my goal is to quilt and bind.

Other things that are still in progress that I worked on this past month...
2. Sunset wall hanging.  This is all ready for hand quilting.  It took a few iterations, but I'm happy with it now.

3. Baby quilt, girl.  This is finished!  I just need to take pictures of it.

4. Baby boy quilt - using Urban Cabins.  I just need to tie off threads and bind.  The baby has shown up, so I'm hoping to do this promptly.

5. Pillow for family room.  I don't think I'm going to quilt this because there are so many seams.  I have all the panels ready and just need to put them together.

January ALYoF

This year I really have a lot of quilts I would like to finish up.  (It's baby season!)  I was thinking about just continuing working along, but decided it would be more fun to do it as part of a group.


So for January, I'm going to link up with A Lovely Year of Finishes and my goal is to
1. Finish Noah's quilt.  I just finished the top in record time.  I think I looked at my design, figured out the easiest way to do it, and accepted some of the unexpected results as design features.  I need to quilt and bind.

Other things to work on:
2. Baby Elanor's quilt.  The design is all set and I hopefully have all the fabric.

3. Baby girl quilt.  I have some of the fabric and am finishing up the design.  I'd like to finish by the end of March.

4. Baby quilt, unknown gender.  Not sure what I'm doing with this yet.

5. Baby quilt, gender TBD.  No progress. I'd like to finish by July.

6. Baby quilt, gender TBD.  No progress. I'd like to finish by August.

7. Aunt's throw. I have quilted the cross part and some of the rays.  When looking at it for pictures I decided that I only need to do four more rays.  There are a few wrinkles, but I might see if they wash out before trying to fix.  (Started April 2013.)  I'd really like to finish by Easter.

8. Baby quilt - urban cabins The top is finished but no recipient.  Possibly one of the babies above (Started October 2013.)

9. scrap quilt. I have started blues.  The number of greens are about equal to the first three colors together.  I expect blue will also be pretty big though.   (Started January 2014.)

10. Space robot quilt.  About a 3/5 of the blocks are finished.  I only finished two blocks last month, but did find a nice backing (Started September 2014.)

11. Metro Lattice I just need to finish the binding by the clip...I'm actually hoping to finish it tonight.  (Started Sept 2014.)

12. Metro Lattice add-on.  Done - just waiting on the quilt to show off and give away.

13. Braid in braid  Top and back are done, just needs to be quilted.  I kind of like the back better than the front. (Started Oct 2014)

WIP Wednesday

As {almost} always, progress has been made! Probably not as much as normal since a new computer game also showed up recently, but I'm balancing spending time with both.

1) My niece's quilt, which was made by my mother-in-law.  I was asked if I'd have it done by Christmas, and gave a 75% chance of completion.  I then found out that my niece has been asking for it, so I thought I'd try really hard to get it done.  I counted 36 parts, which meant if I did two per day I'd have it done on the 19th.  I'm currently about a day ahead because the white portions go rather quickly and some are small.  It's probably good that I'm a bit ahead because I didn't take into consideration taking it off the frame and checking for thread ends that still need to be buried.

2) Urban cabin is a finished top.  I only had about five long seams left and was getting tired of stepping over it all the time.

3) Metro lattice and pillow.  This quilt is super close to being finished, but I'm getting some nice tags for Christmas and decided to wait to finish the binding.  I also made a coordinating pillow to go with it using the scraps.  It's my first pillow and it turned out pretty well.  (The back is shown here.) (So is my son, giving it a thumbs up.)

WIPs

The only small goal I had in October was to finish a few space robot blocks.  Since I technically did that within the first few days, the rest of October was wide open.  I loved having freedom to bounce all over the place!  Usually I really like to have a goal, but there is something exciting to not having a specific goal too.  So here are the things I did, and the things that I didn't do, for October.

Finished:

1. Aunt's throw. I have quilted the cross part in a wood grain.  (Started April 2013.)

2. Baby quilt - urban cabins I worked on this for two nights and got the sashing on and some of the rows put together. (Started October 2013.)

 

3. scrap quilt. I have started greens.  All the pieces are joined in pairs or quartets.  (Started January 2014.)

4. Space robot quilt.  About a 3/5 of the blocks are finished.  I am just plugging away at them. (Started September 2014.)

5. Metro Lattice I finished the top.  It was just so fun to work on!  I should make more rainbow things.  (Started Sept 2014.)

6. Metro Lattice add-on.  I made something with the left over pieces.  Doll quilt?  Pillow?  TBD.

7. Braid in braid I started the braid.  I have about half of the length made before I can start the second braid. (Started Oct 2014)

Goals

Well, I've still been a bit under the weather which is why I haven't been posting much.  It's so much easier some nights to sit like a lump and watch TV than to sew.  But...I have made some progress.  I've come to realize that this year might not be a great year for getting things done, so while I wanted to add some goals to my list I won't be.  I wanted to add several baby quilts for friends, to do reverse applique, and to learn to do curves.  Instead I will just be adding one quilt and apologizing to most friends.  And I'll plug along, getting done what I get done.

But since this list shows up so often, I thought I'd try to get a few more pictures than normal.  My plan was to take these this morning, but in order to do that my son had to take pictures of them at the same time...so he ended up in several.

1. Finish quilt #1 for Sarah.  I only have a few more threads to deal with and than this will be done!  My first finish in quite a while. 

2. Quilt #2 for Sarah.  I'm hoping to finish this by March...and with spring break in the middle of March I'm hoping it will happen.

3. Baby girl daisy quilt.  This is for my new niece.  She's been here several weeks, so it's overdue.  But the quilt I was planning on giving her is too boyish.  

4. Finish the picture quilt.  This was a Christmas present.  It is partially quilted, but isn't quite square so I'm having some trouble with it and am not feeling excited to finish it.  It might also end up being a father's day present at this rate. :s

5. Baby paper airplane quilt.  This is for a baby that's been around a while too.  I think I will see her in August, so that would be a good time to have it finished.

6. Baby quilt.    Not started or planned.  No fabric purchased.  But ideas are running through my head.

7. Work on the T-shirt quilt.  I messed up one of the shirts but am getting another.  It'll be finished sometime.

8. Quilt a doll quilt This shouldn't take much time, I just need to do it sometime.

9. Aunt's throw.   I'd like to lay this out now that I have pairs and make sure the values are still ok.  Then continue to sew them together.

10. Baby quilt - urban cabins I was so close to finishing and ran out of blue.  Then I decided it was more of a boy quilt than a girl quilt.  (I had been hoping the navy would act as a neutral but might not be dark enough.)  So I got fabric but now it is just sitting again as there is no person to give it to at this point.

11. Quilt mint green baby quilt.  Yup, it's all ready just needs to be quilted.

12. Quilt nautical quilt  All ready just needs to be quilted

13. Quilt Christmas quilt  All ready just needs to be quilted. :)

14. Pillow for family room.  I ran out of scraps before it was big enough for the pillow.  So now I either need to make scraps which seems ridiculous or wait until I use the fabrics again or something.  It's been a leader-ender project that I periodically plug away at.

15. make the wall hanging for office.  I won this bundle a (long) while ago but since it's for me it doesn't always get priority.  The purple matches the office perfectly though, so I still want to get it done.

16. Simply solids bee quilt.  I still love this layout and want to get it finished, but since I only sort of have an idea of whom to give it to it has stayed on the back burner.

17. {pretend to} work on scrap quilt.  I actually worked on this a little bit!  It was fairly mindless.  I don't have many red scraps, but they're now all in a roll and I'm working on orange.  The final layout keeps changing, but I figure I'll make something work with whatever I have done.

18. Orphan rocket block  This would probably take less than an hour to finish, but I have no real motivation to work on it.

19. finish green coasters.  These also would finish up pretty quickly, but due to the very lumpy middles they are impractical for use so I've been putting them off.

20. Jeweled floors.  I have some of the fabric for this, but it's been put on the back burner
21. Lost piece (almost whole cloth quilt).  I've thought about this a lot but haven't done anything.
22. Winter quilt.  I have fabric but haven't done anything.
