I was once again given the opportunity to do a review on a book, Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker by Jennifer Chiaverini.
I have slightly mixed feeling about this book. I ended up giving it a 3 (out of five), which is my average rating. Good but not great. If I had only read the first part it would have been a great! But the second part annoyed me. It had nothing to do with Ms. Chiaverini's writing, but I found the story annoying. The problem is that it is based on fact! The seamstress was so caring towards Mrs. Lincoln that several time she put her own life on hold. I can understand doing that for good reason, but I didn't think the reasons were good enough. Anyway, enough ranting since I can't change history. The book as a whole was interesting. The book was mostly about sewing, but it does briefly mention a quilt made from Mrs. Lincoln's dress scraps.
Would you like to read the book next? Leave me a comment (about anything) for a chance to win. The winner will be chosen Tuesday, Feb 12. Oh, that's Mr. Lincoln's birthday. That works out well.
Sounds like an interesting book - I think I'll have the same reaction to the second half as you did :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to read it, my grandmother always told us we are related. To Mary Todd Lincoln so it would be interesting to read, thanks for the chance.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review of the book, I like historical books (fiction or non) so I might check this one out from the library. I liked The Pillars of the Earth and would recommend that.
ReplyDeleteI just checked in to find out what you said about the book. So it was a pleasant surprise that you are going to give it away. Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI have just been reading some of her other books - like the Runaway Quilt, and the Winding ways quilt.... Coincidence????
ReplyDeleteA dear friend just sent me this book - I am eager to read it for myself.
