Doll quilt

I recently finished a doll quilt for my mother-in-law.  It wasn't too fancy, but I had the perfect binding color to bring it all together.  It was also a perfect project to make sure my sewing machine was working well, as I had just gotten it tuned up.

The baby quilt that it goes with is this one:

Baby Bear Claw

I finished up a quilt for my mother-in-law!

I used a white double-loop in the white sections.  I did a matching color meandering star in the other parts.

I wasn't rushing through this quilt, but I was trying to get it done quickly.  So my go-to quilting motifs were fun and nice to use again.  There also weren't too many threads to hide at the end, which was another huge bonus!

Flower garden

My mother-in-law made these beautiful flower for her friend.

I quilted four petals on the flower part and leaves on the leaves.  I matched the thread color to the flower and leaves.  It was a little extra work with all the tails to bury, but it is so fun to use multiple colors of thread.

In the white part I put little tufts of grass.  I did a sideways wave thing to correct the grass...I don't love it.  It kind of looks like water.  I decided to go with it anyway because it's just white on white and it doesn't really matter that much.

Baby girl quilt

My mother-in-law finished this quilt for a friend.  I really like how it turned out.

I put loops in the white sashing parts.  I was going to do more on the colored fabrics, but then I saw how they popped and kept it to a minimum.  I'll admit, the quilting that I did end up doing on the colored parts isn't what I envisioned in my head.  I was trying to imitate the design on the white fabric (see two pictures below), and instead ended up with a circuit board component.  Not bad enough to take out, but if I got to do it again I'd do it differently.

Star quilt

My mother-in-law "needed" a quick turn around on this quilt.  She had made a girl's quilt, not knowing the gender, and then the baby ended up being a boy.

I put loops in the grey and random triangles in the colored section.  Nothing too special, but with different colors and different quilting motifs it comes out special.

Ovals and Diamonds

My mother-in-law brought over this cute little quilt for me to quilt.  She didn't love it so I was tempted to do a really fast all-over design, but decided to practice my ruler skills instead.

I put a plus of ovals in between each set of diamonds, and then a ghost diamond in the middle of the ovals.  The seams were in just the right place, so this is was and easy to line up the rulers to make sure I was centered or going to the right place.   Most of the ovals came out pretty good, but I need to remember to not try and take the bottom turn without changing my hand position first.  There are also a few diamonds that are a little bigger because I went to the wrong intersection, but I decided to leave them.

Fish quilt

I quilted this fish quilt for my mother-in-law (and posted about it a month ago).  She was unable to finish it off and so asked me to do it.  This is just to quilt document what the final quilt looked like, since it's always nice to have a final picture.

We got some older kittens last month too.  This one, aptly named Tornado, has a fondness for fabric.  And by "fondness" I mean "likes to make a mess of any fabric that I have out and growls when around fabric to make sure no one steals it from him."

Fish Quilt

My mother-in-law made this fish quilt for my new second cousin.

I quilted 'Sea Foam' on it.  The swirls and bubbles seemed to match so well with the fish.

I did not quilt over the fish though, causing them to pop slightly from the background.

Halloween quilt

My mother-in-law made a Halloween quilt not too long ago.  I quilted it last month so that it can be enjoyed before Halloween is actually here.

For everywhere except the pumpkins, I used 'candy bucket'.  I have a tutorial for it here.

Here is a heavily photoshoped view of candy bucket.  It has circle candies (like peppermints), rectangle candies (like tootsie rolls), and lollipops.

I put spiderwebs with a few spiders by the pumpkins.

This is the back of one pumpkin - spiderwebs and the same spider as the above photo.

Quilting

I recently finished quilting a quilt that my mother-in-law is going to give to a new family member.

In the white areas I did a back and forth in white thread.  For the colored areas I used 'Chevron Peel' from 180 Doodle Quilting Designs complied by Karen Burns.  I used green thread on the outside squares, red thread on the middle squares, and blue thread on the innermost squares.

Chevron Peel is a new motif for me and it went pretty well.  I should have planned out the diagonal direction for the corners better though.  The ones shown here are nice, but there are a few corners that have the same diagonal twice in a row.

Grandma's robot quilt

I had the privilege to quilt my son's quilt given to him by my mother-in-law.  As the youngest grandchild, this is the last grandchild quilt...at least until everyone needs another one. :D

We chose the pattern together...the fabrics are the same ones that she used for my oldest's quilt.  Matching things are always so fun.  (Interestingly, in the six months it's taken me to post this I haven't really thought of them as the same colors.  The other quilt has a long more of the white/grey in it.)

I put back and forths in the white diagonals and in the white border.  I did figure 8s in the colored border in matching thread...there were a lot of tails to deal with at the end.  I also have a maze in the outermost border, but you need to look at the last picture to see that.

The part my three year old likes the most though is the robots on the back.  They're made from a soft minky, which makes them nice to snuggle up with every night.

Whales

I quilted these whales for my mother-in-law.

I know she used a pattern, but I'm not sure which.  I added in a few more quilting bubbles and copied Lee from FreshlyPieced on the main quilting design that she used for a different whale quilt - scallops.  I wanted something rather fast and it fit the bill perfectly.

Owl Quilt

My mother-in-law made this quilt for her newest grand-niece.  I had the honor of quilting and binding it.

The rows with flowers in the fabric received matching quilted flowers.  This time I tried putting leaves on some, as seen below.  I also put circles in between some petal rows, like the fabric.  It only turned out ok, so I didn't take any pictures of it.  (Also peaking through this pictures is the meandering stars that I used by the owls.)

The rows with owls on branches received wood grain.

The outer border had leaves.  I feel like I've been doing a lot of leaves lately, but they just match all the fabrics really well.  The sashing had back and forths.

This was my September goal...I finished up!  Also linking up with Finish it up Friday.

Nautical quilt - quilted!

I've had this quilt sitting around for a long time.  It was in a large stack my mother-in-law gave me, but she said she didn't care how long it took to finish.  So it probably took close to two years, when the rest of my quilt tops had all been taken care of.

In the main portion, I used a grey thread.  On the sashing I made a rope (from Angela Walters) and in the blocks I did a bunting that matched two of the fabrics.  I made some waves around the border in a dark blue thread.  I originally did the waves in the swimsuit quilt and it was nice to have something already worked out for a water theme.

The back was a solid, so you could really see the quilting well.  At first I was rather nervous about doing the bunting, especially with the solid back where you'd be able to see all my mistakes.  I knew there'd be several because the design calls for some travel over already sewn lines, and I just don't do that very well.

However, if I take a step back it looks fine.  Even better than fine.  I like how the bunting turned out.

Quilting HI quilt - ready to go

I have the HI quilt loaded on the quilter.  My son helped me pick out the thread (the quilt is for him)

I also asked him a while ago what he wanted on it.  "Wires, swirls, loops, and circles," he responded.  I had him draw some, and then added in a few of the things he couldn't draw so well.

Um, yeah.  He doesn't seem to realize that you can't pick up a quilting design like you can a marker.  His wires are more or less a cross-hatch...which would be ok, but not with other things too.  He didn't like the points in my swirls.  He doesn't want lines going over the swirls. I'm ready to start quilting, but only have a poor idea of how to do it.  Right now I'm thinking free-hand lines up and down in the HIs, swirls with circles in the inner border, and loops in the outer border.  I might change my mind by the time I start though. :)

Non-Christmas quilt

I finished quilting my mother-in-law's quilt.  I thought it was a Christmas quilt, but when I actually looked at it it was more of a winter quilt - there were snowmen on it.

So I quilted snowmen on it, surrounded by snowflakes.  The brown borders have snowflakes and the aqua border has circles.  They remind me of the snowballs used to make snowmen.

I found the quilting design from In The Box Jaunt.  I did some snowmen with scarves, some without scarves, and some with stick arms.

The snowmen were quilted in light grey.  The inner snowflakes were done in white.  The outer snowflakes were done in brown to match the fabric.

It was a fun quilt to work on - I enjoyed doing some new designs.
